The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support lets you connect a multifunction USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. The PrintServer is compatible with most USB multifunction printers, and allows full access to printing, faxing, scanning, and copying functions. Like any print server, users on the network can print anytime. The other functions are treated a little differently -- any user can request access to one of the other functions, and get exclusive use of that function until his task is complete. Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly at up to 54Mbps via Wireless-G. The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs. Your wireless data is protected by up to 128-bit WPA-PSK encryption. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the big print buffer handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support bring efficiency to all your home office tasks.

4Works great, documentation lacking  Dec 28, 2008
The wireless Linksys print server works just as advertised. I used it to connect my computers and my Canon PiXMA iP6600D photo printer. The printer's not multifunction so I can't comment on how the Linksys handles tasks other than printing. But as far as photo printing goes, it works great. I can now easily print pictures from both my desktop and laptop machines.

As others have noted, the main drawback of the Linksys print server is the documentation. My install was not without its hiccups. I followed the instructions and made sure the Canon print drivers were installed on my desktop before attempting to set up the print server. After I completed the install I attempted to add the printer but the Lynksys software claimed I didn't have the drivers installed. Worse, when I went to WinXP's Printers & Faxes all of my previously installed printers had disappeared. After a brief moment of panic during which I almost threw the Lynksys unit across the room, I rebooted. My printers were back and then when I tried to add the Canon to the print server everything worked fine.

I adjusted my procedure when I next tried to set up the laptop. I rebooted after I installed the Canon drivers and rebooted again after I installed the Lynksys drivers. Then I had no problem adding the Canon printer and now both machines work fine.

The moral of the story: Be sure to reboot after installing drivers, whether the instructions advise you to or not.

1Would not install, Linksys was no help  Dec 17, 2008
This may be a good print server, I couldn't tell you. The install wizard could not find it, and the Linsksys help page was little help. It gave several reasons that could prevent it from being seen, but little if any resolution help. Finally got on with Linksys tech support and explained that I was not able to install a Linksys print server on a Linksys network, since the Linksys network would not issue it an IP address. After 4 hours of several questions then "run the wizard again",over and over...attempting to install using two different computers...the tech gave up. The tech's advice conflicted with the help page, the bottom line was it would not install no matter what was tried. I think what frustrated me most was the tech telling me to "run the wizard again" after we had done nothing other than question and answer from the previous attempt. If the Linksys techs are that incompetent, I will avoid their products in the future.

Just sent it back to Amazon and will purchase a different brand.

I am not a novice to networking and hardware installation. It should not be that difficult.

1wouldn't work  Dec 12, 2008
The idea behind this is great but it does not support all printers. I have a canon lazer printer (new) and it did not support it. Call Linksys before you buy to see if it supports your printer.

1Not Compatible with XP Service Pack 3  Nov 30, 2008
I just spent 3 hours with tech support and was finally informed that this unit is not supported by XP SP3.

They are working on compatibility problems with another product, thus this is not on the current queue for upgrade.

EXTREMELY disappointing support from a company such as cisco.

1Not worth the money.  Nov 17, 2008
The setup wizard did not work with Vista, which required me to perform the setup manually. Most often, I need to power cycle the print server before using, otherwise sheets and sheets of garbage characters will be printed rather than the job I sent. I spoke to someone that has the same print server, that when used wired, the print server is much more reliable in its operation.
