Amazing at first, but too good to be true. Jan 03, 2010 This was an amazing buy on paper, but the review I'm giving it now is vastly different from the ones I gave when the machine was new. I've had time to get to know the product and no longer have stars in my eyes about how great it ran out of the box. After a little over a year, I can say without hesitation that no one should purchase this computer.
Over the course of normal use (never kept on for an excessive amount of time, stored and cared for fastidiously), the motherboard on this machine burned out twice in the first ten months. And then again, one month out of warranty. So that's that.
Warranty repairs were simple enough through a local Toshiba outlet, which is a service they've since discontinued, and most problems now require shipping the computer back to Toshiba in, I believe, Kentucky.
But the motherboard went again halfway through my thirteenth month of ownership. Warranty expired. Nothing to be done. Yes, I could pay to have it replaced, but what would be the point? Am I going to do that two or three times a year from now on, just for the privilege of using the computer I purchased?
I don't think so, nor am I likely to buy another Toshiba computer in the future. My story of woe brought out too high a number of similar stories from former Toshiba owners in my circle.I know I shouldn't take it personally, but I'm insulted by the shoddiness of this product. I've been taken advantage of by the manufacturer, and I don't appreciate it.
Buy a Warranty!!! You're going to need it!! Oct 29, 2009 I purchased the Satellite L305-s5907 less than 1 year ago and have had to send it in for repair TWICE! The hard drive had to be replaced both times!! I have no recourse but to purchase an extended warranty, which costs about half the price of the laptop!!!!!!! I do not want to spend another $300 just to make sure it's covered the NEXT TIME!!! I am sorely disappointed with Toshiba :(

Aug 17, 2009 O MY GOD I BOUGHT THIS LAPTOP FOR FREAKING 1,000 DOLLARS AND THIS THING BREAKS DOWN IN 2 WEEKS!!!! i CALL TOSIBA FOR THEM TO FIX IT AND THEY FIX IT. YOU MAY THINK THAT NOW ITS ALL BETTER BUT ITS NOT! THE THING FREAKING BREAKS DOWN IN 1 WEEK AND NOW THEY SAY THEY WONT FIX IT!!!THEY FREAKING PUT ME ON HOLD FOR HALF AN HOUR AND THEY SAY THAT THEY DONT GIVE RE-FUNDS, EXCHANGES,OR FREAKING FIX IT. TOSIBA LATOPS ARE THE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IF YOU WANT MY OPINION DELL LATOPS AND HOME COMPUTERS ARE MUCH BETTER! MY FATHER HAS ONE AND IT IS STILL WORKING FOR 5 YEARS STRAIGHT! DELL LAPTOPS ARE WAY CHEAPER AND BETTER THAN TOSHIBA LATOPS!! YOU HAVE TO BE FREAKING CRAZY TO BUY ANY LATOPS OR COMPUTERS FROM TOSIBA!!!!!!!
My first laptop ever, I really like it. (update 1/3/10) Aug 15, 2009 I've had this laptop for about 8 months now and it's still going strong. This sucker is fast! My last two computers were both hewlett packard desktops and they both crashed frequently and weren't as fast as this little sucker is.
People complain about Vista but I like it. (I recommend using Chrome for your web browser)
One thing: For the first four months of using this, the sound was horrible. The speakers were distorting all the time and when I would use the headphones I'd hear this really low end swooshing sound. I finally did some research online and found an audio driver on Toshiba's web site that fixed the problem. I can't remember what it was called but you should be able to find it.
One thing I'm not nuts about is the big Toshiba logo on the cover. I'd like to see that changed. It's also upside down so when the top is open, other people can read the Toshiba right side up.
Overall, a great computer.
Update, Jan 3, 2010:
At about the 10 1/2 month mark it started crashing all the time and it wouldn't let me reinstall the OS. I remember slamming the lid really hard a few weeks earlier accidentally and things started going wrong around then. It was still within warranty so I sent it in. All I had to do was call Toshiba and they had me drop it off at the UPS store and they packed it and shipped it for free. Got it back about 8 days later but it crashed immediately. Sent it back again but this time Toshiba replaced the hard drive. They also replaced the base which had a scratch on it along with the charger input which I had damaged accidentally right after I got it and it had been bothering me ever since. I didn't ask them to do this so I was pretty happy about it. This was about a month ago. It's been running great since. I appreciate Toshiba's customer service. Now I have my fingers crossed that this baby keeps on ticking.
