Was a Great Printer until Windows 7 Mar 17, 2010 When I first purchased this printer, using it with Windows Vista, it was a great printer with the exception it uses ink too fast. Since upgrading to Windows 7, I have not been able to get it to work on my network. It will work a couple days and then get lost or will go off line. In order to make it work each time I need it I've had to use the USB connection.
Print quality is excellent, again with the exception of ink usage. It seems that it has to recharge way too often. Just today I replaced two in cartridges (yellow and magenta) and I had what was indicated as over a half full cyan cartridge. I printed two documents and received a low ink warning on the cyan cartr4idge.
My grade for ease of setup is based on using it on a network under Windows 7. Under Windows Vista it was a 5 star rating. HP Support on this matter can only be described as "they suck!"
Good All Around Mar 15, 2010 I purchased this All-in-One Printer after being laid-off 1.5 months ago. I was used to large, excellent quality office printers and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this little machine. I'm not a computer geek, but I found it very easy to follow the instructions for set-up. The WIFI feature is a dream, allowing me to carry my computer anywhere in the house. I am thrilled with the ability to scan materials and save them to files or email - which has been amazing for printing, filling out, then emailing forms during my job search. I have even been able to share some of my designs for making puppets with friends in China! I have only printed a few photos and am well pleased. The FAX was fast. I also tracked down a company selling compatible ink cartridges that will give me additional savings. All in all, I am deeply appreciative of the design, features, user-friendliness, and quality of this unit. Thanks so much HP and Amazon Warehouse!
No usb cable supplied Mar 11, 2010 I just bought this due to price and other reviews. I should have looked more carefully at what is included. If you don't have wireless capability on your computer that is compatible then your printer won't work. That is bec hp doesn't include a usb or ethernet cable, the only 2 methods other than wireless that will work with the computer to print documents. The cable costs a total of $[...] at amazon (Best 'Worst' Buy for $40) which means they could have gotten it wholesale for $2. I will now have to wait at least a week or more for the cable to be shipped from amazon. It's hard to believe this company would have pulled this kind of crap. They were better in the past but now declining.
Update 3-16-10:
I got in my $[...] usb printer cable from Amazon in just a few days. It worked like a charm. Eat your heart out Best 'Worst' Buy. My linksys router is on the way and I have confidence it will work okay with this printer. The software that comes with this is superb. I printed out a 4x6 photo and it looked like it came from a professional lab.
A good fully featured printer at a reasonable price Mar 09, 2010 This is a good quality, full feature combo unit and is very reasonably priced. Since you can pretty well count on replacing a printer/scanner/fax every couple of years or so, finding one at less than $200 is the perfect fit for me. I have also always liked the seperate ink cartridge/colors design of the HP Photosmarts. Overall this is a very good, middle of the road piece of consumable equipment.
Avoid this printer--too many bugs Mar 08, 2010 I purchased the 309a after using an Canon MP780 for about 4 years. After struggling with this printer for 4 months, I miss the Canon. There was some ergonomic issues that I liked better on the Canon, but I figured that was just a learning curve. Now, however, there are two main problems that make me wish I returned this printer when I could:
First, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, this printer burns through ink, and the ink is way more expensive than the Canon. I had gotten used to buying cheap ink through ebay for the Canon, but couldn't find any cheaper sources for the HP ink. For somebody who uses this in a home office, this is a deal killer.
Second, and more significant, this printer has lots of bugs. I scan a lot (does anyone fax anymore? as an aside, the few times I tried to fax with this, it didn't work. I got dial tone, but said remote fax was busy. I question this, but didn't pursue to find out whether printer was problem). About one-third of my scan attempts, the printer freezes right before it scans, then gives me error telling me to reboot the printer. No rhyme or reason--sometimes it wants to work, sometimes it doesn't. There were some other minor issues, like the envelope feeder freezing up. I've been through tech support, and it was no help. They blamed my wireless connection (my computer, router, and printer are all in same room, so that is not the problem).
The photo print quality, however, is excellent. Way better than the Canon. I am probably going to put my Canon back in service (it needs a new print head), and use the HP printer solely for printing pictures. It doesn't do anything else reliably.
