Computer Quick Launch buttons wont work on 32 bit windows systems Dec 21, 2009 I have been using this computer for about 1 year and below are my consideratiosn:
Pros:
The PC has a very nice look, the extended keyboard makes your life easier(when you use the integrated numeric keys), it has 4 USB ports, 1 Ethernet, Wireless AGN and BT, firewire port, SD card Reader 5 in 1, 1 PCI expansion port, and in the internal it has a 500 GB HDD, 4 GB of RAM memory, up to 512 graphics card, integrated microphone and webcam.
Cons:
If you plan to work in low light conditions the blue lights are a problem and the ventilation system does not works great, your laptop will sound like a running car, I recommend a base ventilation extra.
When working with windows 32 bit systems, the quick launch buttons does not work, neither the HP Tone Control Utility for the treble bass, I asked HP Support and they told me that the QLB only works in 64 bit edittions.
Desktop replacement Nov 29, 2009 Note: You really need to understand just how big 18.4 is. It's barely a "lap"top. This could be a pro or a con, but seriously, it's huge.
Pros: It's mostly all great so I'll keep the pro's brief.
Great screen, full sized keyboard is amazing, audio is fantastic, enough muscle for a power user, great for movies.
Works really well with Vista, Win 7, and Linux
Cons:
Runs so unbelievably hot I've taken cold-packs to it as a precaution. Not exactly comfy on one's legs.
Packaged with loads of bloaty garbage software out of the box. Comes with awful audio drivers/config software. Once removed the Windows drivers work perfectly.
The size cuts down on the selection of accessories. Bags, fans, ect...

Overheating HP's will burn you Nov 29, 2009 We spent thousands on these HP laptops with their terrible design. After a year or so, the things began overheating and now the fans run continuously trying to cool down this very unhappy, noisy, unsatistyfing product and we have to keep hands off the keyboard all the time.
In Efficient & Buggy Design Nov 27, 2009 I have had this laptop for 6 months now going on 7. The LCD glass screen is covered with micro-scratches caused by rubbing against the keyboard during transport. The three rubber stoppers, which usually provide enough clearance for HP laptops with smaller screens, does nothing for this 18.4" monster. This is definitely a design defect that should be repaired by HP. The computer also runs unexpectedly slow sometimes. I have the most tricked out version of this laptop with 8 gigs of memory and the 2.5mhz Extreme Quad Core. Don't bother maxing the memory out. You will never get beyond 50 percent utilization for any application, and I use a lot of intense programs such as Sonar, Sony Vegas, etc. for sound and video production. The media applications take forever to load. I will also confirm that the the touch bar for controlling the volume, sound, playback and your wireless/bluetooth antenna goes whacky occassionally. It is very annoying and unexplicable. I have called HP and they have not provided any solution. I have also called HP repeatedly to get my screen fixed with a permanent fix (because getting the screen replace would only result in future scratches), but I have yet to receive a call back from one of their case managers.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the laptop, but I do not feel I got my money's worth. It's a bit my fault for overloading the laptop with the best features. My next computer will be an Apple. Apple's service is great and I am officially tired of the crap quality of PC manufacturers. I can always run Windows on a Mac using Sun Virtual Machine. Problem solved.
Warning, this som-bitch is very heavy. Get ready for a sore shoulders. This is coming from someone who works out. This is a desk top replacement, not a net book. :-)
Love it! Exceeds my expectations! Oct 25, 2009 I've only had this notebook for 2 months but I love it more every day. It's about my 20th laptop/notebook, and I still currently own & use five others. Mostly Dell. One Lenovo.
But this HP is everything I've always wanted.
I especially like the:
- fingerprint reader
- backlit keyboard
- HP custom tuneup software
- HDMI output, for watching BluRay movies
- integrated HDTV television tuner
- the docking station, which was optional: great sound, holds another 1TB HDD in built-in bay,
The worst thing about this big notebook is that the HP tech support is absolutely horrible, compared with Dell. They must hire any warm body that walks off the street; it's amazing the incompetence you constantly find. Some of these "tech support" people have never even owned a computer, I think. HP ought to be ashamed of themselves offering up such a staff of idiots.
