Poor quality, unreliable, expensive Dec 23, 2008 We all know the "razor & blades" revenue model for printer manufacturers: sell the printer for cheap to lock the hapless customer in, then make a killing on the ink cartridges. With the HP J5780, Hewlett-Packard has taken that contempt for the customer to a new low. This was evident right out of the box, when I realized HP didn't even bother to include the USB cable needed to use the printer. I had to go out and buy the special cable separately. Whether this omission was HP's attempt to cheat the customer out of a few more bucks, or the result of astoundingly poor quality control, I don't know.
But the real ripoff becomes apparent once you try to use your new printer. I got about 30 pages out of the black ink cartridge before it failed. Removing it, cleaning it, nothing could get it to work again, even though I could hear plenty of ink sloshing around inside. Worse, all documents sent to the printer simply piled up in the queue with no response, and couldn't even be cancelled - the printer simply stops responding until you unplug it, cycle it, and reboot your whole system. Buying a new ink cartridge solved the problem, of course.
One of the reasons I bought this printer is HP specifically advertises it as "Certified for Windows Vista". I'm using it on a clean install of Vista Ultimate, with the latest drivers downloaded from HP. Currently, attempts to print a simple document work about half the time. The other half, they pile up in the print queue and stop reponding. They can't be deleted or cancelled, no useful error messages are returned, the printer just seizes up. Sometimes power-cycling it and rebooting clears it up, other times I have to uninstall and reinstall the printer.
HP, here's a message from your customers. We know printers are a cash cow for your business. We know it's standard industry practice to sell the printer at cost and then charge the equivalent of $16,000 a gallon for the ink. We expect to pay through the nose for home printing - to an extent. But the blatant ripoff you're perpetrating with the J5780 is jaw-dropping. At the moment, I can't think of any consumer product of any kind with this level of contempt for the customer built in. Sure, you got my money for the purchase, and you'll get some more for your built-to-fail ink cartridges for now... but how much will you lose over a customer lifetime now you've made it clear never to buy HP products again? Multiply that by several million customers, and that's how badly you blew it with the J5780. Nice work.
INK HOG! Dec 19, 2008 I have always used HP printers and very dissapointed with this one. I seldom use my printer at home. However, I need to replace the black inck cartridge every 2 month. I do not think I even print more than 25 pages for the last 2 months. I took out the black cartridge and the printer could still print black text using the color cartridge. I really think this printer is a lemon product from HP. I will trash this one because it's too expensive to use and will get another brand. Bye HP ...
Good printer Jul 17, 2008 I needed something for my office at work to supplement the laser printer. This works great. One thing I find disturbing is the HP Imaging software pops up on your monitor screen when you go to copy anything. Otherwise, performs as expected.

Good printer/fax/scanner, but INK WARNING Jul 15, 2008 I had an hp refurb for 4 years and it never let me down, so when it was time to re-up I decided to stick with the brand.
Everything is great except the (black)ink. I have replaced it twice in a short period of time and now it's empty again. I would think mine is just a defective unit, but I am reading that a number of other are having the same problem. I would still be on my first cartridge with my old one. Considering the price of ink and the inconvenience of Office Depot runs, I think I'll throw this one up on craigslist and buy something that doesn't cost so much to upkeep.
Good Printer Lousy Fax Apr 10, 2008 The printing features are exceptional for a low end printer. The scanner has a more than adequate resolution. As a stand-alone fax it would also be good. But if you want to support faxing from your PC then I would not recomend this model. It will not allow you send a fax from your PC with a cover page. According to HP support, they had problems getting it to work correctly with Vista so they just dropped the capability completly. I don't know about you but when I am send a fax, it needs a cover sheet to make sure that it is routed correctly when it gets received on the other end. I suppose it would be ok if you call the person you are sneding the fax to and let them know that they need to stand by the fax machine and wait for your fax. Personaly I think that it sucks. Actually it depends on who you talk to at HP. Either they couldn't get get it to work or so many people complained that the default was to send a cover sheet and it was being sent when people didn't want to send it that they just dropped the capability. Either way, I bought one and after spending 15 hours with their support, they came back and said that it works the way they want it to and there was nothing to fix and I should go pound sand. I'll never buy another HP product again. Apparently they have adopted Compaqs support style.
