sorry I bought it Jul 13, 2010 Canon deliberately designed this thing to force you to buy their expensive ink cartridges whether you need them or not (the tech person at Canon told me that all their multifunction printer/scanner/etc. stop functioning completely when there's an ink problem). You can't send a fax or scan a document unless everything is ok with the ink -- nevermind that you don't actually -use- ink to scan or send faxes. I'm giving it one star only because Amazon won't let me give zero.
Also, the ink cartridges go bad just sitting there in the machine, whether you actually print with it or not. I've had this thing for, I don't know, maybe a year and a half, during which I've printed maybe a couple dozen pages. Now it tells me I'm out of ink.
It keeps giving me error messages for different cartridges, sometimes cyan, sometimes magenta, sometimes black. I take them in and out, and sometimes the thing calms down long enough to let me print a couple of pages.
The cartridges cost maybe $60 or $70 for a full set (I haven't bothered to sort out the various offers from Amazon, since I'm not going to buy them anyway).
It works ok when it works, and maybe it would be fine for someone who is going to use it mostly to print, so that you're using up cartridges as fast as Canon thinks you should (there's an electronic chip in each cartridge to force you to buy only Canon). But I'm so annoyed at them for deliberately engineering it to force you to buy more ink, that I'm not going to buy another Canon product of any kind, ever. I'll go with companies that aren't trying to milk me for every dime they can get.
By the way, it's large, heavy, slow, and noisy.
Broke after one year Jul 09, 2010 The head lamp broke after one year and apparently that is the average life of these things. And the whole entire printer and scanner can't be fixed or used after that. What a waste of money! And on top of that- polluting the earth with cheap horrible hardware. Buy a different brand!
Canon is great for cameras but not printers.
Don't buy this printer! You're wasting your money if you do Apr 27, 2010 I sure wish I had read these reviews before I bought this printer. I know for a fact that every time it sounds like it's charging or whatever, it is spilling ink onto that pad that's inside. I had to quit using it because it had about a 1 inch black wet line running down the page, the paper would fall apart it was so wet. Then I would tell it to print like 3 pages and the black wet line faded some, but it was still huge and dark and unusable, then when it finished printing the 3 pages it would do it's little charge thing (aka drinking ink) then the first page I would print would have this sopping wet 1-inch line going down the middle. On top of that, Canon told me all I had to do was take it into their nearest shop and they would put a printhead in for me. Well, I've done that before on a previous Canon printer. This place is 100 miles from my house, one way! I had to take it up there and they refused to even mail it back to me. I told the tech if all it needed was a printhead then I'll buy a new printhead and put it in myself. Ok, I spent $75.00 on a printhead and it didn't make a bit of difference and I couldn't return it, because I had opened the box! (anybody want to buy a cheap printhead?) So then I thought instead of chunking it I would use it as a scanner or fax machine, HA that was a joke too, when the ink ran out (mysteriously evaporated, cause I wasn't printing anything), it locked up the whole machine! I tried to fool the thing by filling an ink tank with water, that didn't work. So since I had 5 unused Canon ink cartridges on hand (all black) I opened all of those brand new expensive ink cartridges and put them in and this thing KNEW they were not the right colors and it continues to be locked up. Another thing, don't think you can try generic ink cartridges either, it knows they are generic and won't print! I've had it, now it's going to the garbage dump. I'll never buy another Canon, 1st time shame on Canon, 2nd time shame on me! :(
Best for home use Mar 08, 2010 This is a great machine for home use and light duty. Anything else; specifically for high quality, start looking at others.
Scanning and printing is okay. nothing spectacular. I would not recommend it for presentations or anyone you need to impress.
In terms of both scanning and printing photos again, it's just okay. The speed in both is just average.
I only use the fax for outgoing not incomming. Thank goodness since I read the reviews on how much ink it uses and I have to agree.
But BEWARE, this machine uses quite a bit of ink. There are five seperate cartidges, two alone for balck and it sucks it up like a vacuum. Forget about the idea of REFILLING because Canon uses a unique nozzle and no can refill it. You'll have to buy cartridges every time. I find it best to purchse online, a non-brand name using recycled cartridges.
But again, if you're only using it for light home use you'll be at least satisfied and you'll only be buying inky every two months or so.

SUCKS INK LIKE A SPONGE! MEMORY USE FUNCTION??? Dec 05, 2009 I use this printer/fax very sparingly because of the problems. One, the ink disappears after very little usage; The cartridges are so poor that the ink is simply drying out. Very, very, very disappointed. I have older, smaller printers that the ink last 5X longer! Secondly, the memory light has a mind of its own. it lights up saying there is a document in memory, when you go thru the step process to print from memory, there is nothing there. I've powered down/up hoping it will reset, but theres that light again. after abt a week, it goes out! Third, the fax documents will shift and cut off the bottom of a page. I've tested this with Canon customer svc where they would fax a doc to me and sure enought the bottom is cut off. NOT AT ALL HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT.
