Little did we know.... Feb 10, 2010 Did careful shopping for a printer to replace far outdated HP all in one officejet we've used for 6 years. Consumer Reports led us wrong on this one! What an ink hog. After 3 months, I figure we will spend $74 every 3 months (just shy of $300 per year) to replace all the ink pots, this is with buying most at Sam's club and the gray thru internet. I haven't even printed photos yet! This is just for the uses of a homeschool and personal stuff at home. Something must be wrong with the machine or market prices are tooo high for these little replacement ink cartridges! 50% too high! Do you homework ever so carefully. I hope Canon fixes the firmware to not have the device seemingly waste so much ink on its automatic cleaning cycles. LOVE most everything else about this printer even that it imports slides and negatives to your computer and it is equal in quality with a stand alone film/negative scanner.
Stay away - Piece of garbage Feb 02, 2010 I purchased this printer with a Canon camera in August from Costco. I have used this printer at most 3 times, 1 to print a color scanned image (4" by 4") and two small text documents (under 1 page). I have scanned maybe 10 items without printing. I checked last night and the ink levels are completely depleted. The gray is empty and the other colors are 1/3 full. Where did the ink go? Who knows? Horrible machine and Canon has refused to do anything about it. They will not acknowledge the problem and said I need to check my print quality settings. Note, I have printed 3 things!!! Check Canon's own support page for more reviews - people there are saying the same things.
Something happens with this piece of junk when it is turned on that wastes ink, either a cleaning cycle or something else. I am completely unhappy with this purchase and even more unhappy with Canon and their inability to do anything about it.
DO NOT BUY!!!

Where does the ink go???? Jan 17, 2010 I've always loved Canon printers because of their build quality, print quality, and the lower cost of their ink cartridges. That is, until I bought the Canon MP980.
Oh, I read the reviews warning about what an insatiable thrist this printer has. But NOOOOOO...., I didn't believe what I thought were exaggerations. Well, they were right - I was wrong.
I'll bet I've printed less than a ream of paper and and a half dozen 4x6" prints and I'm going on my third set of ink cartridges.
Sorry, look at another all-in-one model. This one will drive you to drink.

Ink sucker Jan 10, 2010 This is a great little printer if you like to buy ink on a regular schedule. I use this printer intermitently and it makes great prints, works fast, is easy to use, and I am all around very happy with it except that whether or not you use the color printing, the color inks run out on a regular schedule. Evidently they are just sitting in there drying up. So use them, don't try to save by not printing in color cause they are just going to be empty the next time you want to use them anyway. And, ink is very expensive. Nice to know my money is just evaporating away in there.

Great Quality - Terrible Cost & Usage Jan 10, 2010 I've owned this printer for seven months now. Great quality at a huge cost. I have a brother wireless laser printer (great printer) for all of my black and white and I still go through too much ink using the canon sparingly. Canon's approach has worked; sell the printer cheap and make 80% margins on the ink which has to be replaced often. I wish I never would have purchased this printer.
