1Uses color ink cartridges for all print (no matter what)  Sep 03, 2010
There is no setting for this printer to allow you to print using the big black ink cartridge. We've replaced the color cartridges five times and the black cartridge is still full. We print mostly black and white documents!

On the plus side the color prints are excellent quality, the scanner works really well and is fast and the wifi makes it really convenient to use.

It gets one star because it is expensive to own and because you have to buy a separate black only printer. This printer cannot be used for it's intended purpose.

4Worth the money  Aug 29, 2010
I have had a MP-620 for over a year now. Here is what I can tell you about my experience. I do not use it often for pictures so keep this in mind, though I have printed some and found them to be fine. I am not an expert in anything except knowing durability. This I know by personal experience. This unit has performed fine for me. I wished the ink cartridges were longer lived or cost less. It doesn't seem to be long before is needs one. The only problem I have had is that either my PC can't count or this thing can't count. It works fine for one copy printing from the PC but to want multiple copies you never know what number you will get. Ask for 2 and you get 4, ask for 4 and you may get 16? Manually copying it can count OK. This is a minor inconvenience for me because I don't do a lot of printing anyhow.

5Best Printer I've Ever had - NEVER going back to HP!  Jul 20, 2010
This is without a doubt THE BEST printer that I have ever owned!! I will NEVER go back to HP! Though I question the cost on amazon, I purchased my MP620 all-in-one at Wal-Mart for $99.99 and so I would just suggest perhaps checking around prices but I would hands down buy this again in the blink of an eye.

Yes, for professional picture quality (as in photo shop level quality Epson wins everyday and offers the top of the line printers for pictures no question) you must keep in mind that you aren't going to get the best of the best quality out of an all-in-one type printer, you will need to purchase a photo printer for that exclusive purpose. That being said, for the cost (I paid $99) I do not think it is possible to find a printer which can produce better quality photos for the cost of the product and the cost of maintainence (i.e. ink and paper). The photos can pick up the subtleties of shadowing and highlights well, though it has a harder time with black and white photos (though I am still fully happy with their quality), the printer tends add some degree of sepia type tint to B&W photos. The color representation is great with all other photos - and it should be mentioned as well that often printers get blamed for color quality problems when it can often be settings within your computer programs used to view the photos or even the settings of your monitor which can lead you to believe that your photos may be containing certain colors or shading that in reality they don't or are different.

Canon also included a USB cable (at least they did at the time I made my purchase) which almost no one else does these days; that can be just another expense that gets added to the 'hidden' cost of printers.

I think that this is hands down, NO QUESTION the best printer I have ever had with regard to ink consumption which can very often easily surpass the cost of the printer rapidly. My previous HP printers would constantly print out "alignment" papers anytime I ever changed an ink cartridge, made an adjustment with settings from the computer program I would be using, etc. despite the total and complete lack of need for anything to be aligned with the printer. It was one more way that HP 'ate up the ink' and I was unable to ever turn off this feature and had been told by several computer technicians that this indeed is something that HP has done with their printers and that sales of ink is their goal. I also found that my previous HP printers went through ink at an inconceivable rate and forget printing photos with my HP all-in-one, may be I could get 8-10 4x6's out of them before the ink cartridge would need to be replaced and my HP cartidge was a combined color cartridge so one color runs low even though the other 2 may be fine you must replace it all. This canon MP620 has separate cartridges so you only replace what is low and what needs replacing! No unecessarily wasting & replacing ink cartridges. I can very conservatively get 2-3 times printed what I got out of both my previous HP printers.

This printer has the capability of holding a good amount paper in the drawer which I also found much better than the previous HP's where my paper was just resting in the back of the printer. Since the paper stays in the drawer it means you don't have to pull it out to print a picture or something else which is something I had always had to do with HP. You can simply designate where you want the printing to choose the paper from when you hit print (i.e. add photo paper to the rear tray for printing pictures while leaving the 8 1/2 x 11 in the drawer, etc). I have never had this printer jam, it has only had one instance of having difficulty with printing anything I tried to run thru it (that was vellum and it went thru fine once I kind of guided it thru the beginning by holding it straight so it could 'grab' it); It definitely prints photos only on canon paper - I've tried a couple of other brands and it just doesn't absorb. The photos printed also dry MUCH faster than any of the HP ones I'd ever printed - this means that I can print photos faster since they will ultimately end up one on top of the other after printed and they are dry enough by the time of going thru the printing process so as not to smudge or smear.

The scanning function is of great quality and works wonderfully and fairly quickly. It has an acceptable level of resolution and quality for scanning photographs and again if you are looking for that 'professional level' scanner you need to really look at something beyond an all-in-one.

This is simple to operate and yet has so many options and much flexibility especially for the price and this can be done from the computer software or the home menu on the printer.

The wireless function is FABULOUS and was the primary reason that I ultimately purchased this particular printer. I have not had any problems with it and did not have issues when setting it up. It did take a little while, but I followed the steps in the included manual and then it was working. I find that it is able to detect and receive the wireless printing signal from another room (I am in a one bedroom apt) and so I can take my laptop in my bedroom with my printer being in the corner in the living room can still print just fine.

This printer prints fast, for a home/student/general purpose use and is quieter than most that I have heard. At some point there is also only so much noise reduction that can be undertaken with printers. I do look to hearing the printer 'noise' indicating that when I hit 'print' it is starting to print this is a particularly helpful cue since I use this wirelessly and will often print multiple documents from the sofa and only afterwards get up to collect them - I do not find it to be obnoxious, too loud for a printer to be in the corner of my living room, a horrible distraction if printing while watching tv etc.

Bottom line is I do not think that you will be able to find a better printer for the price and the quality that you get is such that I doubt you will be disappointed. You just must keep in mind that you are not purchasing a professional level photo printer, scanner or standard printer - if you are looking for that and going to compare this printer to that product category you will for sure find faults and flaws. If you understand the category of product, this is at the top and I have been more than pleased and would buy this again in a split second.

2Who designed this?  Jul 20, 2010
I have had my Canon MP620 for over a year now, and have become fed up with it. I am a resident at a hospital and my girlfriend is a teacher/masters student, so we use it quite a bit and have had several issues with it.

First, as other reviewers have said, the ink runs out VERY fast. There were times when my girlfriend had a presentation to do and I had to print some (not a lot) of documents that we would go through multiple ink cartridges a week, at one time replacing every color within seven days. Mind you, we were not printing a bunch of color photos. This is a workload that past, simpler printers I've had would have handled.

Second - and this drives me absolutely insane - is that you CANNOT SCAN if just ONE of the ink cartridges is out. This blows my mind. Who thought of this? Actually, who DIDN'T think of this? It seems like a problem that would have either been thought of in the early R&D phase of the product, or at the latest a testing phase. How it got to market without fixing this vexes me. This is compounded by my first point, which is that the ink runs out quickly. And this isn't a case of me not knowing how to use the printer - I've checked for an alternate way to scan/make this work, and there isn't one. The main screen has an error message that the ink is out, not allowing you to go to the Scan function (or any function, for that matter). And if you try to use it wirelessly (or wired) and set up the scan on your computer, it gives an error message that the scanner is not functional. Absolutely mind-boggling how a company allows this to be released.

As for the quality, it is not bad. I am fine with the quality of the printing and the speed at which it prints. The wireless works fine, though it occasionally drops out my Airport signal to my computer. I will chalk this up to an error I made in setting up the network, so I don't dock Canon for this.

But in the end, this printer is much more of a hassle than it's worth. Don't buy it. Buy something that doesn't cost $100/year in ink and actually will let you perform a function that requires no ink if it runs out.

4Good Printer, Easy  Jul 19, 2010
This printer is very easy to use, it prints good quality. I love the multiple function feature.

Pros-
-Easy
-Multiple Uses
-Good Quality

Cons-
-Wifi mode is not easy to figure out
-Sometimes makes the color duller in scans
-Sometimes the paper get crinkled while it is coming from the paper tray and then it says the tray is empty.

Overall-
This printer is mostly very easy to use and it does it's job for what i need, and it's price. I really am happy with this printer.
