Once the jets become clogged it's bricked May 08, 2010 While it worked, it performed well. One major annoyance was that when any color cartridge was empty, it would not print greyscale. However, after about a year of moderate use at home, the black cartridge stopped printing. After trying another new one to no avail, I did a bit of research and found that these printers have a tendency to get clogged jets that a normal clean cycle will not fix. It needs to be sent in for maintenance which is about half the price of the printer. I would not buy a Brother printer again because of this.
Good network printer with low-cost ink Nov 17, 2009 Don't know about other guys, but I am very sensitive about ink cost. Got this printer one year ago from OfficeMax at $125 and still believes this is the best bargain on the market. The printer setup is easy enough. Simply insert the disc or download the driver/software from Brother's website and follow the instructions. You also need to set up the wireless setting on the printer, which is also pretty straightforward. Once done, you can enjoy the printer on every comptuer in your house.
The printer quality is good, but not top notch. The photo print is, however, good enough to be displayed on the wall in a photo frame. The copy and fax functions are also passable for home use. Never really used the answer machine so cannot really comment on it. The real advantage of this printer is its ability to use third-party ink without any catches. Since there is no encryption chip on the cartridge, any compatible ink can work on this macine and costs only a fration of the original ink cartridge.
Overall, this printer has above average printing quality, reasonable fax and copy functions, and the control button and console are easy to use and set up. The paper loads under the printer, not overhead so it can be placed in cramped space as well. I would say this is a nicely designed printer for household use and the cheap ink is absolutely a huge plus.
Nothing but Trouble Nov 16, 2009 My problems started when I tried to connect my laptop to the printer wirelessly. The printer wouldn't recognize my computer and Brother's customer support couldn't figure it out. Thankfully, since laptops are portable, I moved mine close enough to hook it up physically.
You can imagine my surprise when, not long after owning it, it began making noises in the middle of the night. It was not possessed, although that now seems like a more favorable alternative; instead, it was "cleaning" the ink cartridges. I turned off the printer and went back to sleep, but it woke me up again several nights later, after TURNING ITSELF ON, to clean the cartridges again. Eventually, I had to leave it unplugged when not in use. This didn't stop it from getting paper jams regularly, though.
I didn't understand the true meaning of "cleaning" until I began to receive messages warning me of low ink levels in the color cartridges. This seemed impossible--I had printed a *single* color page in all the time I'd owned the machine. It turns out "cleaning" is when the printer uses up valuable ink to prevent clogging of the cartridges. I decided to ignore the warning because I assumed that leaving the machine unplugged would prevent cleaning and, thus, loss of ink. Well, it prevented cleaning, but the ink still vanished. Actually, I could still see ink in the cartridge, but the printer wouldn't recognize it.
"All right," you're thinking, "at least you had your black ink. It's not like you used a lot of color." Unfortunately, if any of the four ink cartridges is "empty," the machine will not work. It won't print *anything* until you replace the ink, leaving you no choice. I am so angry at this deceptive and manipulative practice of Brother's. I had thought they were better than HP, which had a lawsuit brought against it, but their methods are the same.
I cannot encourage you too strongly to stay away from this printer. If you absolutely need a hardcopy of something, consider a hammer and chisel.
waste of money -- only looks good on paper Sep 24, 2009 When this Brother MFC-685CW worked, it consumed a lot of ink just because of the automatic, periodic cleaning. I never printed in color. Never. But after several months, I had to replace all 3 color cartidges.
Now, after about a year, the BLACK INK will NOT print. It looks like the printer is working, but then there's nothing on the paper. I tried its cleaning function several times, but to no avail. And if you google this problem, you'll find plenty of occurences.
Note that other functions like SCAN and FAX seem to be working still. However, those are only the bonus functions to the COPIER. If you're looking for a good machine for scanning and faxing and do NOT mind the copier/printer part, then this machine is for you.

LOTS of regrets... Jul 18, 2009 After several months ownership this piece of equipment finally got me so frustrated I wanted to write a public comment.
(1) It won't fax overseas. Even just to fax one simple piece of paper to another country. It seems so sensitive they fail repeatedly.
(2) It won't work as a network printer, wirelessly OR wired. I have spent multiple hours over several days over several months trying to get this darn thing to run on my home network. It works as a direct USB printer is all(!).
I have run my own software company for 10 years so I am 'IT-literate'. I even ENJOY solving IT problems - normally. But the MFC-685 has done nothing but frustrate. I have sought all the available software updates and installed/uninstalled the software using both Vista and XP Pro machines multiple times.
Enough is enough. I refuse to spend even more hours to get this piece of hardware to work correctly. Brother, you've lost my custom. I know I should have bought a darn Lexmark again. My advice - AVOID the MFC-685.
