SERVICE FROM BROTHER STINKS!! Dec 31, 2008 I had this machine for 2 whole weeks when it just powered off and NEVER turned on again. Problem with Brother is you either get a great product or a lemon!!
So I called them and emailed them, "tried plugging it in different outlets," and at their request took it to the service center (30 miles away). The service center ordered new parts, then ordered more parts when those didn't solve it. Then I waited several weeks while the part (a power pack!) was on backorder. When it came in, and the machine STILL did not power on, is when the real fun with BROTHER began!
Every time I or the service center rep called BROTHER, we would get all kinds of different answers, lies, stall tactics...
My absolute favorite, however, happened after BROTHER insisted that I speak with them again (as if the service center did not know what they were talking about) and explaining to them that the machine is completely dead with a black screen, they wanted me to "print trouble shooting reports from the machine and fax it to them from the machine" that DOES NOT TURN ON!!!
BRILLIANT!!
So, since I originally contacted them on November 24th, and here it is December 31st.....I STILL DON'T HAVE MY PRODUCT OR MY MONEY!!!!

Exceptional value! Dec 26, 2008 I bought this unit to replace a Xerox WorkCentre 250 AIO that I could no longer get ink cartridges for and a H-P DeskJet 932C that was unreliable and used ink cartridges that would fail before the ink was half gone. It also has taken on the primary scanner chore for digitizing documents.
So far I have been very happy with this AIO.
Pros:
- I scan a lot of articles into Nuance's PaperPort for ease of future access and searching. The scanner will handle a full page of the tabloid size trade magazines. The scanner is also ready to go without any lamp warmup which saves time. Using the ADF to feed originals onto the scanner saves a huge amount of time over laying each page individually on the scanner glass.
- Being able to print color CAD drawings on 11" x 17" paper has been fantastic! Previously I had to tape together letter-size sheets or e-mail the drawings to a print shop and then drive to the store to get them.
- I don't fax often but the options menu on the Brother is intuitive enough that I don't need to pull out the manual each time that I want to send a non-standard fax. This AIO has all of the common fax functions.
- Setting up the printer on my home network (wired) was painless. All three computers recognized the printer and loaded the appropriate drivers on the first attempt.
Cons:
- The color saturation and accuracy on the scanner is not great. When scanning photos or slides I still use the old Epson Perfection 1240U. It takes a little time for the lamp to warm up but the scanned images are much better.
- I miss having a manual feed paper tray. When I need to print envelopes it is still easier to fire up the old laser printer than to put envelopes in the paper tray of the Brother.
- A problem cropped up early on where the Brother wouldn't print after using the scanner function unless it was unplugged for a couple of minutes, then plugged back in. Checking Brother's web site revealed that a firmware update was available. Since installing the update the unit has performed flawlessly.
I used to design printers for IBM years ago. It is amazing how much functionality has been stuffed into this AIO for so little money. Buy one!

Nearly perfect so far... Dec 18, 2008 I bought the MFC-6490cw after reading the favorable customer reviews, even though I didn't have a good opinion of Brother equipment. It was a good choice. I replaced an HP Deskjet 1220c wide format printer ($400 originally) because I need ledger size scanning as well as printing and the lowest cost I have found for a ledger size scanner is about $180. I can say as a printer it surpasses the HP in every catagory. Sharper, faster, easier and more free of jams( so far).
I use a USB connection and probably won't use the wifi ever, so cannot comment on this capability.
One user reported that he could not use the document feeder (adf) while scanning. I can say it will definately work for scanning or copying. The adf however skews the ledger size paper too much for my needs and so I will just use the glasstop scanner position instead. The skew adjustment auto-fix feature unfortunately only works with smaller sizes.
Another user complained about the auto tray selection feature. This unit will, when set up properly, auto-select the correct tray according to print size when printing only. I am using letter in tray 1 and ledger in tray 2. When copying you will have to manually select the correct tray. Evidently it isn't "smart" enough to identify the document size while scanning. Also FYI, the online description of the procedure to do next-document size selection only is incorrect. You cannot temporarily change the tray 2 paper size or type; you must change those in the setup menu only. So, use tray 1 for temporary paper size changes.
It looks like the 2x ink cartridges are more cost effective since they are only slightly more expensive than the standard sizes. I have noticed that not all stores stock either size to fit this printer. The Walmart in my area only has an older non-compatible type. Be prepared to have to order these by internet.
System: Win XP Pro, 2.53GHZ, wired network
A great multi-function office machine for the price. Nov 30, 2008 I bought this to replace several separate components that were not aging well, and 11" x 17" print & scan capability plus the built-in Wireless were the main selling points.
Connecting to my network was a little problematic. To connect, I had to change my office network's encryption, as I was using a WEP encryption of HEX codes that don't translate to alpha characters, but this printer will not allow anything but alpha. Anyway, once that was done, the unit worked beautifully, and actually has so many features in the software that I haven't had the time to explore them all.
Brother MFC 6490cw All in One Nov 24, 2008 Absolutely fabulous! A great product with great quality print, scan, fax and copy. The seller was excellent...received the item in 2 days! Very pleased. The machine is bit large for a home office and it didn't come with a USB cord to connect to the computer.
