 how to scan multiple images into one document Feb 19, 2010
So far the printer is doing fine but the main reason I bought it was to be able to scan an 8 page contract into one document. I don't want someone to have to open each individual page. Can someone tell me how to do that? I put the contract into the top feeder and it goes into a file as 8 seperate documents..please help!

I needed a printer capable of printing out 11x17 drawings. I had had an 11x17 laser printer until it recently died and I didn't want to drop the 3K to replace it. I did my homework and found that this printer had all the functions I needed and more (not quite the print quality of a laser, but it is an inkjet and it was less than 10% the cost). Admittedly, with a $200 dollar price tag I was skeptical. I'm pretty tired of all the 'disposable' printers being sold these days that are really inexpensive to purchase and come with 'starter' (1/2 sized) ink cartridges that cost 2 to 3 times the cost of the printer to replace. Realize this printer also doesn't come with standard ink cartridges, it comes with high yield ones, which in the case of the black one prints twice the number of pages compared to a standard cartridge. On top of that, the cartridges aren't terribly expensive to replace, around $20 for the high yield ones. I think this says something about the printer/manufacturer.
On top of that, I have called their tech support twice now, once because of a software issue with the printer which was caused by some other software on my computer and once because they emailed me about some software updates (nice of them) that I had some questions about. Both times I spoke to a live person almost immediately. Also, I'm not the least bit prejudiced but admittedly when I have a technical problem it is nice to speak to someone who is easy to understand and is not working off of a flow chart.
By my giving this printer 5 stars I'm not saying there aren't better printers out there, but for what this printer costs and what it is capable of doing, it's doing a great job for me.

As usual, Brother delivers worry-free device Feb 05, 2010
I have purchased and used many different HP printers and this is my 7th brother printer. This one, like my other brother printers, has installed and worked flawlessly since I bought it. I set it up to work wirelessly, and it was a piece of cake to install on both a Vista machine and an iMac. I was able to print a photo from an SD card without much difficulty (even cropped it and made several other picture adjustments.) The 11x17 size is crucial for us because we print 11x17 charts for use as training materials. The printer has thus far just worked.
Some cons (but no deal-breakers): The printer wakes up far too often to keep the ink cartridges calibrated. We only print to this printer in large batches so we now keep it turned off most of the time to avoid wasting electricity and possibly machine life.
Also, the ink is ludicrously expensive compared to our old color laser jet (though that requires doing a lot of printing because the upfront cost of the LJ toner is high but produces more pages.) For us though we only need to print in color once in a while so it's not a deal-breaker for us.
Finally, the print quality of a picture on the SD card was not over-whelming despite using high-grade kodak glossy picture paper. I didn't try printing other pictures from other cameras (this is not the purpose of the printer for us) and I didn't try printing to the paper recommended by Brother so I can't say for certain if this is a problem compared to similar color ink-jets.

This has been a great printer for the money. Color is sharp and the ability to scan 11x17 documents is well worth it. I could not find anything comparable that had the ability to scan 11x17.

Although this printer is marketed towards large scale copying and scanning, it manages to be affordable by not doing either one of these very well. If you're running a small office where its mostly numbers and text and graphics don't have to "pop," then I would recommend this printer purely on affordability. If, however, graphics are key to presentation or selling a product (I'm in architecture myself), then don't be fooled by the cheap price. Spend a bit more money, buy a large format scanner (Mustek is a decent if not affordable option here) and a large format printer. You'll get quality results and sleep better knowing that you won't still have to resort to the insane prices of Kinko's to get those presentation caliber prints that you so desire. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I did return mine after two days of disappointment.
