5Brother MFC-6490  Aug 31, 2010
Basically I have found this Brother MFC-6490-CW to do what I wish, very good scanning, the A3 the main reason I bought it, then the combination of printer and fax cleans up my desk/work area. Fab that there is no USB needed. Some parts of the trays seems a bit flimsy, but not in areas where I would be stressing the parts.
So Far pleased. Have yet to see about ink use, time will tell.

5Awesome small job site printer  Aug 29, 2010
I purchased this printer for a construction job site and I have been very surprised by it. I needed something cheap just to print certain submittals so I went cheap as I could find.

Pros:
- Full 11x17 scanning surface, great for scanning portions of full size drawings.
- Dual paper trays, didn't realize this when I ordered it, great surprise.
- Quick, especially for an inkjet. I haven't timed it but it makes short work of 11x17 Gannt charts (project schedule).
- Maybe the ink level sensors are optimistic, but I've run off maybe 50, 11x17 Gannt charts and another dozen or so 11x17 plan prints, and it's yet to show a dent in ink levels.
- Quiet, cannot hear it over the air conditioning (although the AC is pretty loud).
- Setup was a breeze, i'm an ex-IT professional, but I'm pretty sure that anyone with basic network awareness can set it up. I was short a network cable so I connected to the wifi, set a static ip (although it initially grabbed one via DHCP) and then ran the installer, which located the printer and installed flawlessly. As a bonus the installer package was a small download (especially compared to HP's), the status monitor doesn't use much in the way of resources (3MB or so of RAM) even though it's monitoring two network printers on this job (Brother 8480DN) and plays nice with druvers from a Brother 7340 from another site and a HP C6100 at home (yech).
- Shipped Amazon prime, $4 next day, how the heck can you go wrong?

Cons (barely):

- Its has a rather large footprint. It's not really a con since it's large size is a side effect of the large scanning surface, just make sure you have room for it.
- It's only 4 color. Print quality for business printing is fine, but I haven't done any photographs but i'm not expecting much from a 4 color printer.

The only thing that would make it better is if it printed 12x18 (so I could halve a 24"x36" drawing while maintaining semi-usable scale, but this is a rare ability in general so I can't hold it against it). In short; I was excited about the value two weeks ago when the price was higher, it's even better now that it's come down. It's a high recommend.

4Great Price for an 11x17  Aug 12, 2010
While the print quality isn't going to compete with a 6 or 8 ink Epson, you aren't going to find a better deal for a printer (that also scans up to) 11x17 and throws in wireless networking as the icing on the cake. Cheap ink is readily available and you get good mileage out of the cartridges--unlike Epson.

3Great, except color quality  Aug 10, 2010
Alright, this machine was relatively cheap for what one gets: color, scanner, 11x17, wireless connection, etc. I can't complain too much, BUT if your concerned about color reproduction then go somewhere else. The color printed is somewhat washed out/faded from what's on the screen. I've been through all the software and hardware settings, as well as 2 calls to customer support (fairly useless each time) and it seems that is simply how this thing prints. Again, I suppose it's OK given the price, but still a bit of a bummer when other 5 year old ink jet printers print better colors. Oh well.

3Good for 11x17 printing; poor for color scans & duplex  Aug 09, 2010
I love that this scanner/printer is 11x17, and very affordable, and has wifi. All that is great. However it's been a big problem for us, because:

1. We were intending to manually fake duplex by running pages through a second time, and
2. I need to scan color drawings on off-white paper.

You cannot do manual duplex on this machine. It feeds multiple pages at once or it jams. I was trying to print my 20-page zine, and it's taken 4 hours already today due to slow print speeds, jams, multiple page feeds... a real pain. I have maybe 60 duplex sheets printed, and about 25 pages in the wastepaper bin.

Secondly, the color sensitivity in the scanner is poor. I do watercolor drawings on deeply cream-toned paper, and the paper scans as pure white - obviously this means all the actual watercolors get quite washed out as well. It works well for black and white, and *sometimes* for color - but I wouldn't recommend this scanner for artists.

The software is a bit limited as well; it's constantly trying to print to the wrong paper tray, hard to clear it when it gets stuck, and sometimes we can't figure out why it's still trying to go to tray 2 when we already told it to go to tray 1. More paper wasted.

In the end, I think this machine would be great for a lot of people, but don't touch it with a ten foot pole if you're trying to print comics or zines or if you scan color art.
