Does what it's supposed to but beware of WPA setup! Mar 03, 2010 Nothing special to write here. It's tricky to set up. I couldn't get the wireless set up over WPA TKIP no matter how hard I tried (hours).
I finally switched to WPA AES and it worked fine. I couldn't find any documentation about this on the Brother website or elsewhere. Pity. It could have taken 2 minutes to set up. I relayed this information to a friend of mine who has the same printer and he said he ended up doing what I had described.
So, if you buy this printer, it works great with a Mac but Bonjour (Apple's French device connection magic) won't see it until the machine associates itself correctly with the network. I could only do that on a secure network using WPA AES encryption. You don't need to go through the setup programs. For most users you'll be able to the control panel. It seems painful, but it really isn't.
Buy no more Brother Feb 19, 2010 I bought this printer from another supplier and used it for about two years. It gave me a lot of trouble every time I moved it. After moving, it is always malfunction with red light saying "JAM INSIDE" which actually no jam at all. It prints at its own wish from time to time after we turn it on again. Sometimes it prints for a short while and then said jam again which actually no jam at all. This repeats again and again.
We contacted Brother customer service and its executive office requesting to fix this printer's inherent problem with a patch or replace it. They refused to do so. Instead, they wasted us a lot of time asking our personal information like our fax number but at the end of the day not solving the printer's inherent problem.
I bought a Toshiba DVR Toshiba D-VR650 Super MultiDrive 1080i Up-Converting DVD Recorder and VCR with Built-In Tunerabout two years ago and I used it recently for recording digital air TV programs, but it can't. This DVR is obviously out of warranty period. I called Toshiba and they provided me a patch free of charge and the DVR can record TV programs now without any problem. A DVR cannot record is not a DVR.
A printer cannot print is not a printer. I called Brother and they refused to provide any patch or replace the printer because it is out of warranty. But, this is their printer's inherent problem and they should fix it.

This printer is a piece of junk! Two years ago when it was still within warranty. I moved the printer and there was Error E51. I checked its user guide and Brother website, it was no where to be found what it means. I cleaned the printer many times to make it work again. It was just luck - I even blew air into the printer in order to clean it to make it work. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Finally through pure luck it settled down. I should have reported it to Brother at that time and replace it with a new one under warranty should I have known.
Before I throw this junk away two days ago when Brother refuse to fix or replace the printer, instead of "JAM INSIDE" it came up with this Error E51 message again. I sent e-mail to Brother support and they said even they don't know what is Error E51 and cannot find it in their manual! Can you believe it?
They suggest me to clean it with Alcohol this time but it still doesn't work!

I have another Brother printer, MFC-9840CDWBrother MFC-9840CDW Color Laser Multifunction Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex. What is the problem of it? I used it for almost a year and it seems fine initially. When it said the toners are running out, you have to replace all three toners. I replaced them as advised. But, the new Magenta toner was spilling all over inside the printer. I went to replace it and put back the old Magenta toner as an interim solution. It worked. Not only it worked. It worked for more than a month! What does this mean? It means the Magenta toner was not out of toner. It asked you to replace it before it ran out. The toners are not cheap. They are expensive. Now, there is a warning signal asking me to prepare to replace its Magenta toner. Yeah, the new one replacing the spilled over one is still waiting.
This happens to the black toner. I ordered the long life one. It is not yet used up and it suddenly dead today without any warning asking to replace it with a new one. I tried not to replace it because I know there is about half of the toner inside. It did not work. So I have to replace it with another new one. I am still trying to figure out how to use the one that actually is still half full of toner.
Will I buy Brother printer again? You bet!

Long time user Feb 01, 2010 Long time user of Brother printers. Have had about 15 printers thru the years, from HL-1240 up to the HL-5280 DW. Have six Brother printers in current use, three are MFC- in office use. All are Double side printers.
Thru all these years only two problems and these were not the printers fault.
#1. Lighting srike took out one MFC,it was on a surge protector, but the power line ran across about 500 feet of open water. The FAX and double sided copier function still worked.
#2 Bought a couple of cases of recycled paper, OK on single side printing but paper failed on double side, took both cases back, girl said they had lots of returns on that paper. Been buying paper there for years.
Noise ??? Have two printers within 8 ft of this computer and I never noticed any noise. Trace of noise if I want to here it.
Lights dim ??? Have two printer and backup drives on the same plug with surge protector and a dedicated (#12 wire) direct connection to the main power box, litle light dim when I try to notice it. It has never caused a problem of any kind.
Have one HL-5250 DN that has printed over 110,000 pages and still going strong. Used lost of toner and 3 or 4 drums thru the years, but no problems.
To put it simple, we have just not had no problems with Brother printers, maybe we are just lucky, but I believe they are good.
Great Printer, but the fan noise drives me crazy Dec 05, 2009 Great Printer for the price.
But the cooling fan is unnecessarily loud. I will probably return it just for this reason, which is a shame, because otherwise I like it.
Excellent printer Jul 20, 2009 I really like this printer: It is very fast and the paper curling problem I worried about is negligible.
