software did not function for installation Jan 06, 2009 had to use windows plug and pray to search for a driver from the internet, the disc included with the printer had worthless software
Exceptional Printer, Easy Setup Jan 06, 2009 Since I do most of my printing in black & white, it made sense to go with a laser monochrome. This printer has been a answer to my home office prayers. It's inexpensive, prints easy to read text page, wakes from the energy-saving sleep cycle very quickly, and was easy to set up for printing, although the wireless setup on my iMac was a little more involved than I had expected. However, once set up, the wireless has worked exceptionally well, anywhere in the house; from the desktop, to the laptop, again, anywhere in the house, as well as outdoors.
I love it Jan 06, 2009 Its just what we needed and the price was great! I do worry a little since printing on two sides requires opening a tray everytime and replacing the paper. So far no problem, but some parts are a bit flimsy so I hope it lasts.
Set up not for novice Jan 06, 2009 I picked this Brother laser printer because it was recommended as Editor's Choice in PC magazine. I'm a novice where installing PC hardware is concerned and had problems hooking up wireless. I ended up asking my friend who is an expert in network. I expected him to hook the printer up with no problem but even he had some problems trying to make the computer communicate with the printer.
I'm very happy with the printer once it was properly set up but ease of set up wireless? Not for users who are not familiar with configuring wireless network.
great printer, with caveats Jan 05, 2009 We bought this printer about a month ago to replace an HP LaserJet 4L that died after 16 years' service. We like it a lot. I like that it can be set up wirelessly, so reducing our tangle of cables and easily prints from any PC in our home network. My wife likes that it looks nice and feels solid. We both think it prints well, it is fast, and we got a great price, around $85, from Amazon.
A few nits:
1. Wireless setup is not easy. I followed the instructions on Brother's website FAQ (from Brother support, USA, pick model HL-2170W, then "FAQs and Troubleshooting" then "Wireless Setup Instructions" then "Windows - wireless setup without a network cable." The instructions worked perfectly, though they are about 40 pages and several dozen steps. So this printer is not "plug and play" in the sense that it takes some patience to set up. And I would not expect our parents in their 70s or 80s to be able to set it up -- to do so you have to be comfortable with very basic wireless networking, ie, what's your SSID and do you have WPA or WEP and what does hexadecimal mean.
2. The printer is a power hog and spikes our power lines, especially when it comes out of sleep and starts printing. I can't believe it got an Energy Star rating. We had to upgrade our UPS to support this printer, since our 5 year old UPS with a low-ish battery sensed a power surge and wanted to turn off the PC every time the printer kicked into action.
3. Its networking seems to behave badly, apparently grabbing the IP address of other things on our network and generally messing stuff up. In particular, this printer causes occasional problems for our bridge-connected Sonos sound system. The solution to those network problems seems to involve turning the printer off, restarting network stuff, then turning the printer back on (limiting the IP addresses available to the printer may be another option).
