It Has its Flaws Mar 17, 2010 If you are in the market for a budget laser printer, the HL-2170W is a good choice. I can't compare this product to other laser printers because I've only used this one. I use it solely for the office and the bulk of my printing is shared between paper and envelopes.
Overall, the printer was easy to setup wirelessly. It took me 15 minutes to have it up and running. Wireless connectivity is excellent. I've never had any downtime due to the network's inability to connect to the printer. In terms of quality, the printer is also outstanding. It prints only in black and white, and on the highest print setting, the printer does a fantastic job.
My Complaints
This printer does not have a "two-way" connection with the computer. So if something is wrong, the only indication you have is a red blinking light on the printer. To diagnose the problem, you have to be somewhat of a mechanic, opening and dissecting the machine.
In addition, if, G-d forbid, your paper does get stuck inside, it is extremely difficult to get the paper out, not to mention all the scalding hot parts you may accidentally touch while trying to remove the paper.
Feeding envelopes through the manual feed tray (in the front center) works well; however, you have to get the envelope in there just right, otherwise the printing will come out crooked. In addition, the envelopes come out slightly curled.
Toner issues -- The printer comes preprogrammed to print at a very good quality, which wastes precious toner. Thankfully, the settings can be easily scaled back to save on toner. However, if the printer thinks that it is out of toner, it will stop working completely. The first time, I replaced the toner, the next time it happened, I took out the toner, rocked it from side to side and continued to print with it.
I get well over the estimated 1500 pages given that I scaled back the print settings to save on toner. Aside from its few quirks, the printer is a good value for the money.
NOT EASY TO SET UP Mar 15, 2010 I have been a Brother products supporter for years. I have had the printer since mid-January 2010 and its still sitting on my desk unused. I am not a technician but I can normally find my way through manuals--eventually. This one is totally obscure, illogical and impractical. The so-called "Quick Setup Guide" well, it's not. I have spent at least twenty hours trying to figure it out. I cannot afford to have a technician come to the house, even if there was one around. When Manufacturers produce an electronic device, there should be a scale of one to ten -- easy to difficult on the sales tag. I'm quite disheartened with the product. This from soneone who purchased a Brother Typewriter back in 1962.
Does everything my last printer didn't Mar 15, 2010 So far this is looking to be a very good printer. One down side is that it's too loud for me to leave on all the time. It does however turn on quickly, and is able to print within a minute after being turned on. Printing is fast, and the print quality is good. My previous printer took forever to turn on, a long time to print, and quickly used up ink cartridges - so this printer is a vast improvement.
The wireless setup is complicated, and I am good with computers. I can set up the information and it will work fine until it is shutoff. When shutoff however all of the wireless setup is lost and needs to be reentered. It works fine physically connected to the network, which is how I'm leaving it for now.
Still not working with my laptop Mar 15, 2010 I had absolutely no problem hooking the printer up to my PC since I already had a Brother's laser printer that died there but three different people have tried to get my laptop to print to the printer and we haven't succeeded yet. The actual printer is great but it is frustrating that I am having so much trouble with the wireless connection.
Brother HL-2170 Mar 14, 2010 Great printer for the $! Went from an ink jet to this one. Does a great job, even looks great on the ink saving setting! Only con is the noise, it is quite loud when printing (wouldn't be a problem ,but it's in our bedroom & my husband has been doing lots of late nite printing!). We have 3 computers networked to it & have had no problems.
