3My review after 2 years of ownership  Aug 08, 2010
I bought my EEE PC 901 for the use of notes in a school setting. I write way slower and an utter mess on paper and decided to finally stop having to re-type my notes after class and just type my notes while in class. I was looking for the best at the time and the most economical on my student luxurious budget.

I went in knowing that there was issues with having two separate drives, meaning your 4GB hard-drive holds your OS and major components. And the other 12GB are on a slower drive. This means that often your computer will alert you of having no memory or in my case just start randomly freezing when trying to deal with too much at one time (surfing the internet while also switching back and forth to my Star Office). I had read of other savvy users that were able to combat this issue, but without a CD drive, you really are forced to use very large USB drives to try and attempt removing all the junk from XP.

I constantly have to defrag and clean-up my 4GB hard-drive. I have still had my computer constantly freeze causing me to loose all of my notes. And autosaving causes the computer to go into a frenzy of a temporary freeze. The full freezing only started after a year of ownership, but the temporary freezing happened since the day I started using Star Office Suite.

Pros:
-Small size, perfect for those small college desks
-Keyboard is easy to assimilate too. I'd sometimes notice myself typing on my larger computer the way I would with my EEE
-Vibrant colored screen, on target with a normal computer, had a matte feel to it (you get used to it and looks great with movies)
-Can play TV shows in full quality directly from netflix instant play, meaning it has great speed on an internet connection
-Long battery life! I could go 10-12 hours without charging for the first year. After two years it is closer to 2-4hrs
-I love StarOffice Suite! I wish I had it on my main computer! It has the best functionality and controls of any office suite I have used. Ever! It is a form of OpenOffice, but I like it even more than the one you can download on OpenOffice's website.

Cons:
-TRACKPAD!! I have installed all sorts of software to try and fix this jumpy trackpad. Even a glaze of a finger will cause your pointer to move over. While typing Id constantly find my pointer moved.
-The size of the SSD 4GB hard drive is WAY TOO SMALL! Constant low memory and freezing due to it
-The power charger seems to be made cheaply. Over-heats and can even burn you. I think it sometimes shorts out, which might have caused some of the internal damage to the computer, or at least has caused it to not charge some nights

I am going to try and take my EEE to a computer specialist to try and fix my freezing issue. If I cant fix it. I am going to give up, and find a bigger and better netbook. But my first year of ownership was pure bliss!

4EEEs great, but don't buy the SSD models  Jun 23, 2010
I have owned one now for a few months. It's a great computer--zippy enough for all it does (email, web dev, browsing, watching videos, etc) but it is PAINFULLY slow when downloading. It locks the whole system up. It is fine when downloading to a usb drive, but when I download to my internal 30 gig SSD, it becomes horribly slow, locking the services process at 90% cpu.

I strongly recommend NOT buying one with an SSD. You are paying extra for a drive that doesn't boot noticeably faster and locks up your whole system every time you download a file.

5Bought it for my 80 yo Grandma  Apr 01, 2010
I sent it to my Grandma in Canada as a gift. She's never used a computer before so I installed video skype on it and enabled the auto-pick up feature so it accepts called from her known contacts (me and the family) without her having to touch a button. The computer has been on for a year straight and no issues (hd is flash based). A+++

4Love this netbook!  Feb 19, 2010
This netbook is awesome. I got it a great deal on it. Very fast with the SSD only down side with the SSD is the disk space. I take it almost everywhere. The device is well worth it. My productivity and lifestyle has increased since i've gotten this netbook. Great for being on the go. I highly recommend a netbook and i've been happy with the ASUS. Just wish it came with a larger SSD. I will be upgrading soon with a RUNCORE SSD... must check that out. Thanks

2Bad over the long haul  Jan 27, 2010
I've owned my Asus eee 901 for about a year and a half and I wanted to point out some problems with it that aren't obvious at the outset.

1. Not enough hard drive space

The computer is split into a fast 4 GB hard-drive where the operating system resides and a slower 12 GB hard-drive. For a typical windows installation, 4 GB gets eaten up fast and even if you move all your programs to the second drive and do all kinds of slimming down of your windows folder it still is difficult to make room. Unfortunately, you cannot move the windows installation to the larger 12 GB folder because of very slow access times.

2. Poor hardware quality

Two things stand out. The first is that the power adapter always sparks every time I plug it into an outlet. The second is that the plug itself eventually does not firmly connect to the computer and eventually it becomes difficult hard to charge it or keep it on AC power as the power connection keeps stuttering.

I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because it is still somewhat usable for me and the quality is about what you would expect for the price.
